The program consists of 2 or 3 weeks of study programs at the SAIT campus and then students spend the final week in the Rocky Mountain National Parks which the students find the highlight of the course.
Students have classes everyday and even on Sunday for the 2 or 3 week study program in Calgary before they head out on the ESL camping adventure field trip.
The highlight of Wynchemna’s educational programme is a famous one-week camping trip through the Rocky Mountain National Parks. The students are always tremendously excited at the chance to photograph deer, elk, mountain sheep, and the occasional bear. It is time to reflect, enjoy and learn about nature. During the camping trip there are no formal classes which is why the students have classes every day the first 2 weeks of the Wynchemna course. It should be noted that although there are no formal classes, students speak English at all times during the camping trip and there are numerous learning activities where learning English is fun, interactive and meaningful.
Students are expected to speak English at all times during the day as well as speak English during the camping trip. A lot of English is learned outside the classroom.
In the mornings, there are 4 hours of formal English lessons. Students have 3 different teachers in the mornings. In the afternoons and evenings, the teachers accompany the youths to the many different recreational activities offered: beach volleyball, rock climbing, kayaking, skating, canoeing, movies, and much much more. This means that each youth is immersed in English throughout the day.
On average, Wynchemna has 1 teacher for every 7 students. This creates a relaxing atmosphere while it encourages the youths to speak more English throughout the day.
